Hey, everybody, welcome to the wildly optimized wellness podcast. My name is Toréa Rodriguez. I am your co host. And I am joined by

Evie Takacs 1:18
Evie Takacs I'm your other co host. It's so nice to be here. Toréa and I wanted to take a second and introduce ourselves in this initial episode. That way when you tune in, you know who you're listening to what our stories are, while we're here, what our intentions are with this podcast. So to give you background on me, I am a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition practitioner, alongside Toréa and we'll talk about what that means. But I really got into the health space out of necessity. So I was diagnosed with Hashimotos, which is an autoimmune disease that led to hypothyroidism, right out of high school, I was told, you know, take this medication, we'll see you in six months, there's not much else we can do. And that didn't sit quite well with me. But I was also at a point in life where I just decided I'm going to go with it, you know, this is what my doctor is telling me to do. So I did that for 10 years. And then those 10 years are developed, you know, gut issues, hormonal imbalances, anxiety, bouts of depression, I just, I didn't feel like this was the way life was meant to be lived. And so I'd had enough I was tired of going to the doctor, having my lab work look really well. But I wasn't feeling well. It just didn't make sense to me. And the older I got, the more I realized, like, there's got to be something else out there for me. So I hired my own holistic health coach, and he really opened up my world to the different modalities of healing and the resources that are available to us and what free medicine is and how the body should really be functioning and how we can optimize our health and our wellness. And I fell in love with it. And you know, coincidentally at the time I was a classroom teacher. So my background is in special ed. And I was teaching but I was also having that moment of I don't really want to be in the classroom long term, because I just felt like my health was deteriorating, the more I taught, the more health issues I had, because I was just so unhappy in that position. And I felt like these, these have to be connected, right? Like the anxiety, the depression has to be connected with having, there's got to be some correlation with my gut issues and all of that, too. So I made the transition to health coaching. And I really fell in love with it. I fell in love with taking the information that I learned formally in my certification programs and what I learned personally, and now applying that to clients, and that's what we hope to achieve with this podcast is giving you information and resources. It's really about you know, I learned that you don't have to constantly have flare ups from your autoimmune disease, I learned that hormonal imbalances don't have to rule your life and they don't have to be at the forefront of your mind. And gut issues are not, you know, normal, though they're common, they're not normal. And anxiety is something that you don't have to live with all the time. And so learning that I really wanted to pass that along and hopefully inspire other people to get to the point where they're feeling like they are in control of their health, and not the opposite.

Toréa Rodriguez 3:54
Love it, love it. And similarly, you know, I had a health issue that cropped up for me, you know, before this, I was flying as a professional pilot, and absolutely in love with that career. And, you know, just through a routine checkup, we discovered that my TSH was super high. So then that got me referred out to an endocrinologist. And that's what led to a diagnosis of Hashimotos and hypothyroidism. Right. So what was interesting about my particular case is that the standard medical approach to that of applying a prescription sideward replacement wasn't working right and we would double the dose and we would double the dose more and it continued to not really work to solve the problem. And what that led to is my endocrinologist basically saying, Look, if you need to resolve this quickly, which I did, because I had to pass an aviation medical exam the next month, you know, and I was kind of putting his feet in the fire on it. He said, Look, I don't really know what else to do except for to, you know, radiate the fibroid and cut up the rest of the tissue. And I was like, wait a minute, hold on, hold your horses here that feels very dramatic and drastic, why is this so particularly hard to treat? And that's really when I turned towards functional medicine and natural medicine, I elected to take a leave of absence. And during that period of time was when I started to really get interested in what are the underpinnings what's going on in the biochemistry, I had an undergraduate degree in biochemistry. And you know, what, what's happening here, and I just like you, Abby, I felt totally head over heels for it, because it finally I finally had this like, applicable. Like knowledge from my training, and at university, it became very applicable for me and my health. And so, you know, for me to really start to dig into that, I thought, Gosh, how cool would it be to help other women go through this process of learning about how their bodies are working and learning how to optimize things and learning how to course correct, basically, without having to have surgery, and radiation like that was that was the only solution in the Western medical medical world. So you know, getting that training and seeking out that training, that's when I sought out Functional Diagnostic Nutrition training, and was able to start really doing this kind of work. And so now this podcast is being created so that me and I can really share with you what are those things that move the lever a lot? Like, what are those lifestyle elements that really made a huge difference, not only in our lives, but with all the women that we've worked with in the past. And so, you know, we've got a cumulative experience of probably 15 years between the two of us, I know, I've been doing this for nearly 10 years now. And we're just excited to bring this to you so that you can learn more from us without having to go through the threat of surgery and or radiation like I did, right, I don't want anybody to have to do that. So we also will be bringing on some really interesting guests, we have met quite a few people who are very knowledgeable in this part of the industry. And we're excited to bring them on as well. So you're going to get a lot of us and then occasionally some other guests too, to spice it up a little bit.
